Chapterhouse- Whirpool [1991]

Victim of a double whammy -- caught in the already building backlash to the shoegazer scene at home and completely ignored in the States, as was just about anything else British -- once Nevermind and Ten hit the charts Chapterhouse's album debut could have, and should have, won a bigger name for itself. At once more dance-flirting and garage-punky than most recordings by other My Bloody Valentine obsessives that emerged in the early '90s, though suffering the same underplaying in the vocal department, Whirlpool builds nicely on the three earlier EP releases with a similar sense of "what the hey -- if it works, try it." As an album, it doesn't per se connect as a unified piece -- the final track listing comes from a variety of recording sessions with a large number of producers and remixers, including Robin Guthrie, Stephen Hague, John Fryer and Ralph Jezzard. As a collection of mostly killer tracks, though, this is mighty fine.- Ned Raggett

A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns is a brief mini-album of amazing songs. If Kurt Heasley's Lilys didn't have so many other stellar releases, this six-song album would be a crowning achievement. The first five tracks are stunning examples of pop perfection. Singapore Sling

The first time I listened to Singapore Sling's debut album, it sounded like a bunch of indie greats from the past fifty years got together to play a fun garage session. However, the prominently identifiable influences from Jesus and Mary Chain and The Velvet Underground, is in no way a turn-off. The album opener "Overdriver," reminiscent of the Butthole Surfers' famous song "Pepper," showcases their playfulness when noise and feedback is intertwined with a danceable groove you would only listen to in the seediest of nightclubs. A definite must listen if you're into noise rock and if you like the Raveonettes.

Lilys - In The Presence of Nothing

Lilys, led by singer/songwriter Kurt Heasley, are a notoriously difficult band to categorize. With an ever-evolving lineup, home base, and a sound that swings pendulum-like between My Bloody Valentine-influenced shoegazer and indie guitar pop, the answer to the question, “Who are the Lilys?” depends of the qualifiers of “when” and “where.” “A Nanny In Manhattan” became a #16 hit in the UK after being used in a 1998 ad campaign for Levi’s jeans.Currently, Heasley is working with producer Michael Musmanno, combining his affections for pop and esoteric rock for the Manifesto label.

In The Presence of Nothing.

Phase one of the Lilys' odyssey plunges Kurt Heasley and friends -- among them members of Velocity Girl, the Ropers and Suddenly Tammy! -- into the heart of the shoegazing phenomenon; In the Presence of Nothing is the quick follow-up to Loveless that My Bloody Valentine never made, with tracks like "There's No Such Thing as Black Orchids" and "The Way Snowflakes Fall" capturing the moment in vividly dreamy and atmospheric detail. A relic of its time, to be sure, but also a wonderful testament to shoegazing's brief but seminal moment in the sun.

School of Seven Bells- Alpinisms

Like many bands before them, School of Seven Bells were born as the result of a late-night revelation. Benjamin Curtis connected with sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza in 2004 while their bands—Secret Machines and On!Air!Library!, respectively—were on tour. While watching PBS at 3am, Alejandra caught a show about the School of Seven Bells: a mythical South American pickpocket academy that may or may not have existed in the ‘80s. The idea of seven minds working as one appealed to her, as did the phrase’s cryptic musicality, and a creative spark ignited.

My Bloody Valentine- Glider EP

Artist Description:
My Bloody Valentine is a shoegaze band formed in 1984 in Dublin, Ireland. The band’s best known lineup is Kevin Shields (vocals, guitar), Bilinda Butcher (vocals, guitar), Debbie Googe (bass) and Colm O’Ciosoig (drums). Shields and O’Ciosoig are the only original members of the band still in the group. In 1991, the band released their second full length album “Loveless”, later declared one of the finest albums of the 1990s and the definitive work of the shoegaze genre. The band struggled to record a follow up album and split in 1997. The band reunited in 2007 and performed several concerts the following year.
