The Feelies - Live at CBGB 1977

New Jersey indie/jangle/post-punk heroes, The Feelies will be back in April 2011 with a new album after almost 20 years. Here is the first single that was released a couple of days ago:

So just for a taste of what The Feelies were like some 30 odd years ago, here's a live album that kicks some major ass. One of my favourites is the raw version of "Original Love".

Also, Happy Year of the Rabbit everyone!!!!!!

Guai Li - Flight of Delusion (Maybe Mars, 2010)

Guai Li is a punk rock band which loves the beautiful music ardently. Band’s name comes from Chinese saying “guai li luan shen”. It refers to something that happens that can’t be explained by science.

Guai Li’s history can be dated back in the year of 2005. At that time, Wen Jun, He Yifan(bass), Liu Yue(guitar) and original drummer Yang Fan established the band The Dirty Ones, which was the former of Guai Li. Afterwards, Yang Fan left the band. In 2006, Wen Jun settled in Wuhan and established AV Okubo with Xu Sheng and Lu Yan. After a show, Wen Jun and Xu Sheng left Wuhan. They went to the north to Beijing and changed band’s name to Guai Li. Later, the experienced rocker Shi Xudong who has played music for several years joined Guai Li. Then, the lineup of the Guai Li was completed.

Every member in band has his own preference in music. Each one brings different elements to the songs. Wen Jun likes all the noisy and weird music. Liu Yue likes new indie rock. Xu Sheng likes traditional rock and pop music. He Yifan influenced by post punk deeply. While Shi Xudong prefer original punk music and hardcore. The band aren’t confused for the different likes between the music but try to blend everyone’s idea and feature in the music. Sometimes, the motive is from someone’s experience in daily life. In arranging part, others will try to break the original feeling of the motive, to create a new impression and add everyone’s thinking in. Sometimes, five persons play impromptu together and come cross a new song.

As their name, Guai Li people love all the mysterious and inexpressible things, like the ghost, witchcraft, universe, white noise and a little addiction. Guai Li’s music and playing style are just like their name, weird but full of inexpressible charm.

Guai Li and famous producer Fang Wuxing cooperated in the band’s debut album Flight of Delusion. The album has released in September, 2010. At the same time, the band toured in China for debut album release.

Was She a Vampire - EP

So, I am a big fan of Skywave/Ceremony type of sound. The other day I was on a forum I frequent regularly and I stumbled upon this little gem of an EP. The band hails from Russia and it sounds like Skywave and Ceremony put together. A perfect record to fill the void while we wait for Ceremony's new album. Speaking of which, I will be posting some Ceremony and Skywave and a few other bands from Safranin Sound in the days to come.

PS. I asked for the permission of the artist to post it here. Download it. I highly recommend it.

Illusion Division By The Hand - EP

IDH (short for Illusion Division by the Hand), formed in September, 2007, is a distinctive post-punk band in Beijing. The two members, Xiaoyu (vocals, guitar and bass) and Lu Gang (drums), are both from Inner Mongolia. Influenced by Joy Division, Bauhaus, David Bowie and many other bands and musicians, the songs of IDH are intense, incisive and impressive. They have exceeded the traditional post-punk style and developed their own murky mode.

Suicide- Suicide [1977]

Proof that punk was more about attitude than a raw, guitar-driven sound, Suicide's self-titled debut set the duo apart from the rest of the style's self-proclaimed outsiders. Over the course of seven songs, Martin Rev's dense, unnerving electronics -- including a menacing synth bass, a drum machine that sounds like an idling motorcycle, and harshly hypnotic organs -- and Alan Vega's ghostly, Gene Vincent-esque vocals defined the group's sound and provided the blueprints for post-punk, synth pop, and industrial rock in the process. Though those seven songs shared the same stripped-down sonic template, they also show Suicide's surprisingly wide range. - Heather Phares

The Chameleons- Script of the Bridge [1983]

With two years, numerous radio sessions, and incessant gigging under their belts since their debut single, "In Shreds," the Chameleons came to the studio determined to make a great first album with Script of the Bridge. To say they succeeded would be like saying Shakespeare did pretty well with that one Hamlet play of his. Script remains a high-water mark of what can generally be called post-punk music, an hour's worth of one amazing song after another, practically a greatest-hits record on its own: the John Lennon tribute "Here Today," "Monkeyland," "Pleasure and Pain," "Paper Tigers," "As High as You Can Go," the breathtaking closer, "View From a Hill."- AllMusic

Snapline

Snapline is post-punk band from China.

They have become, almost overnight it seems, perhaps Beijing’s fastest rising young band. From being little more than a side project of Carsick cars’ drummer Li Qing and bass player Levis, in the last year they have taken on an identity all of their own, earned full page interviews in the local media and released their first 7” single in the US. When Li Qing trades her drumsticks for guitar stings it is something of a revelation - at times she sounds strangely like The Fall’s Marc Riley, or even Fred Frith, carving dense little filigrees above Levis’ slow loping basslines and the sharp sweaty pulse of a drum machine; over the top of it all rides singer Chen Xi’s chilly deadpan tales of urban dislocation and frustrated longing - behind the designer glasses and charming smile, you just know this man has some dodgy websites saved to his Favorites!

When producer and ex-PiL man Martin Atkins came to Beijing to check on the local scene, he was delighted with dozens of bands, but wholly awestruck by Snapline’s uniquely weird melodies, and immediately insisted on producing their first CD. They are not the easiest band to love, but their followers are passionately loyal and their music keeps growing in strange unexpected ways.

Line Up:
Vocals : Chen Xi (陈曦)
Keyboard : Li Qing (李青) (Carsick cars)
Bass : Levis (李维思) (Carsick cars)

Re-Tros|Rebuilding the Rights of Statues

Born in the shadow of post-Tiananmen nihilism, the collapse of state run industry and a desert that will someday swallow their city whole, Cut Off!, the first E.P. from pioneering Beijing-based post-punks Rebuilding the Rights of Statues delivers explosive, danceable, unsettling energy that leaves you unsure whether you want to take your clothes off and shake the spiders out, or go look for a rope, a closet and a copy of Iggy Pop’s The Idiot.

This is visceral music built from the bones up, think ubermench rather than Frankenstein’s monster: beautiful, brilliant and brooding.

Drummer Ma Hui’s rhythms still hold the echo of the earthquake that wiped his birth city off the map in 1976, while Liu Min’s irresistible bass lines and staccato, strangely sensual yelps make you remember why you first fell in love with Blonde Redhead. Standing over it all, Hua Dong’s shattering vocals and addictive open-fisted guitar stitch the flesh to the muscle like some demented monkey king. Even legendary composer/producer Brian Eno was so blown away he stood in on guest keyboards (we couldnt even make this stuff up, seriously).

You ever play ‘seven minutes in heaven’? Cut Off! is like that stretched out for half an hour: tangible sweat-soaked darkness, blood-pumping atmospherics

…and they never open the door.

P.K.14 - Shei Shei Shei he Shei Shei Shei

P.K.14 - Beijing based post-punk band. The abbreviated name P.K.14 is a continuous play on words. Primarily standing for Public Kingdom for Teens (青春公共王国), known to also stand for Pent Kilowatt One More Than Thirteen, Pelikan Kraut Seven Times Two and Psycho Killer Two Less Than Sixteen amongst others…

Founded 1997 in Nanjing by Yang Haisong, Sun Xia, Xu Feng and Yang Sen. P.K.14 played their first show in December of 1997 and since then they have released four albums and toured China and Europe extensively. Current line-up has gradually come together during the last seven years. The band is self managed and have released their material through Modern Sky, Sub Jam and Kuguabang. P.K.14 occupies a space in Chinese music that might be analogous to that of Television or the Talking Heads in the New York of the 1970s. They are among the most thoughtful and self-referential of bands, with an enormous curiosity about music coupled with a complete inability to care about musical fashion. Among the older bands ( i.e. those formed before 2002) they have the greatest influence on Beijing’s younger bands. But for all the love these bands have for P.K.14, and although they are at the heart of the Beijing scene and among the most loved and respected of the Chinese indie bands, at the same time they are unique and seem to be traveling in their own scene.

Vocals - Yang Haisong (杨海崧)
Guitar - Xu Bo (许波)
Drums - Jonathan (坛坛)
Bass - Shi Xudong (施旭东)

The critically acclaimed album by this veteran post-punk outfit in China. Released on Modern Sky Records.
