Several Girls Galore- The Noise We Make EP

Surprising us with more great music out of Colorado Springs is Several Girls Galore, with their new EP 'The Noise We Make.' The group is lead by New York native Will Vunderink who via 'The Noise We Make,' proves that he is, above all else, an amazing song writer.

The self recorded EP showcases Will’s abilities; every chord is exactly where it should be. Every hook, be it vocal or instrumental, highlights the music perfectly and as an overall composition the EP is dark and beautiful, and throughout the 5 songs, the songwriting keeps the aesthetic consistent without it ever getting boring.

The best part about 'The Noise We Make' is that none of it sounds forced. Several Girls Galore has the prowess of artists who have been around for a decade or two longer than them, and you can hear what sounds like the ease of seasoned musicians from this impressive young group.

While there are some similarities with bands like Deerhunter, or Women, or maybe Pavement, Several Girls Galore definitely has a sound of it’s own with Will’s haunting Vocals, driving drum and bass, and the quickly moving finger picking of melancholy guitar chords.

I have been stoked on this band since I caught them in Boulder the other day and am even more excited now that I have their EP.

City Rain- This I Will Remember [2009]

The music, in general, is not particularly experimental or avant-garde. In some ways, City Rain reminds me rather strongly of The Postal Service, even though though the two artists don’t actually sound very similar. Runyan clearly desires to foster an indie and perhaps even slightly pop sound on this record, and towards that goal, all of the songs are relatively short, with almost half lasting less than three minutes and all lasting less than five. However, there’s an earnestness on display here; a sort of refined but intense emotionality inhabits the album. This I Will Remember is not a masterpiece, but it’s a very pleasant record that manages to inspire feelings of calm in the listener, despite the emotionality on display. If you’re into electronica of any sort, particularly IDM of a more minimal vein, then I recommend you give This I Will Remember a spin. At thirty-three minutes long, this LP sometimes seems more like an EP, but this transitory nature suits the music perfectly. Any more would be overkill, but the way it is, Runyan has crafted a quite nice half-hour for anyone willing to listen. Consider this one politely recommended.- Tom Butcher

Tycho- Sunrise Projector

Tycho is the music project of San Francisco based artist and producer Scott Hansen. Hansen began his foray into electronic music with 2002’s The Science of Patterns EP which was followed in 2004 by his first full length, Sunrise Projector. 2006 saw the release of Past is Prologue on the now defunkt IDM label Merck records. In 2007 Ghostly International released Tycho’s first single under that imprint, “The Daydream / The Disconnect”. A new full length album on Ghostly is in the works and slated for a 2009 release.

K.C. Accidental

Before Broken Social Scene, there was K.C Accidental. Headed by Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin, they released their debut album, Captured Anthems for an Empty Bathtub in 1998. The songs were ambient, with long buildups characteristic of post-rock. They released their second album, Anthems That Could Have Been Pills in 2003, with from contributions from members of the Canadian Indie scene including Emily Haines. Anthems That Could Have Been Pills, features a more mature approach to instrumentals, with repetitious chord progressions and experimentation with various fills, taking their time to build perfectly soothing soundscapes. The album is a good indicator where Broken Social Scene is headed towards musically.

several girls galore began writing songs in november 2006, and the songs you are listening to are those very songs. several girls galore records with garageband and the built-in computer microphone, and that’s why everything sounds less than optimal. several girls galore is somewhat embarrassed by its voice, but has no other voice to use. several girls galore is now in college and hopes to write more songs and form a band someday soon and perhaps record somewhere.
several girls galore tries to write songs without a sense of self-importance or overbearing ambition, simple songs that might get stuck in your head and make you kind of warm and happy inside. several girls galore doesn’t want to take over the world, or save it, for that matter, just occupy space on its surface and make music for people to listen to while they occupy other spaces on the earth’s surface. several girls galore hopes that you like its songs, and that you will say so if you do.
