A Grave With No Name - Mountain Debris [2009]

London’s A Grave With No Name mine their own distinctive vein of haunted, freaked folk/ art rock, tracing delicate fissures in the emotional radiography of loss and longing to spellbinding effect.

Flying Lotus- Los Angeles [2008]

I have been meaning to post this album for the longest time. I don't even know where to being describing this album. Fly Lo manages to showcase his extensive knowledge of electronic music through his evolving beats that constantly changes form. However, there's enough coherence in the transitions that it could be interpreted as a concept album about Fly Lo's musical forays. This album is more hip hop and soul oriented with strong nods to J Dilla emerging through the chaos but some songs like 'GNG BNG' and 'Parisian Goldfish' could definitely hold their own in a club. The ever present vinyl crackle in the album is a perfect representative of the gritty urban Los Angeles vibe. This album will be undoubtedly be hailed as a classic in the years to come.

Brothertiger- Vision Tunnels EP [2010]

What can I say about chillwave... personally, it has always been a love hate relationship. The scene was saturated with this glo-fi, dare i say, fad along with the lo-fi movement, where the aesthetic was totally misguided. However, I must say I do appreciate certain artists like Toro Y Moi and Memory Tapes and nothing evoked a warm sunny beach day more and the seeming nonchalance of the music just commanded you to lay back and relax.

Brothertiger is quintessential chillwave, with the heavily washed synths, the processed reverbed out dreamy vocals, the big booming kick drums and the heavy thumping bass that punishes any sub-woofer it encounters. It's a little early for summer but hey, spring is creeping up and it's perfect for those sunny days.

Several Girls Galore- The Noise We Make EP

Surprising us with more great music out of Colorado Springs is Several Girls Galore, with their new EP 'The Noise We Make.' The group is lead by New York native Will Vunderink who via 'The Noise We Make,' proves that he is, above all else, an amazing song writer.

The self recorded EP showcases Will’s abilities; every chord is exactly where it should be. Every hook, be it vocal or instrumental, highlights the music perfectly and as an overall composition the EP is dark and beautiful, and throughout the 5 songs, the songwriting keeps the aesthetic consistent without it ever getting boring.

The best part about 'The Noise We Make' is that none of it sounds forced. Several Girls Galore has the prowess of artists who have been around for a decade or two longer than them, and you can hear what sounds like the ease of seasoned musicians from this impressive young group.

While there are some similarities with bands like Deerhunter, or Women, or maybe Pavement, Several Girls Galore definitely has a sound of it’s own with Will’s haunting Vocals, driving drum and bass, and the quickly moving finger picking of melancholy guitar chords.

I have been stoked on this band since I caught them in Boulder the other day and am even more excited now that I have their EP.

You can now DOWNLOAD “The Noise We Make” for free at
Check out their music and look out for more music and live performances from Several Girls Galore in the near future.

Film School- Alwaysnever EP (2003)

A myriad of influences ranging from post-rock, dream pop, slowcore all coalesce to form one of the most aurally pleasing pieces of songwriting. The key word here is atmosphere and Film School successfully manages to take you on a nostalgic stroll through lonely musings. Perfect for evenings and rainy days.

Guai Li - Flight of Delusion (Maybe Mars, 2010)

Guai Li is a punk rock band which loves the beautiful music ardently. Band’s name comes from Chinese saying “guai li luan shen”. It refers to something that happens that can’t be explained by science.

Guai Li’s history can be dated back in the year of 2005. At that time, Wen Jun, He Yifan(bass), Liu Yue(guitar) and original drummer Yang Fan established the band The Dirty Ones, which was the former of Guai Li. Afterwards, Yang Fan left the band. In 2006, Wen Jun settled in Wuhan and established AV Okubo with Xu Sheng and Lu Yan. After a show, Wen Jun and Xu Sheng left Wuhan. They went to the north to Beijing and changed band’s name to Guai Li. Later, the experienced rocker Shi Xudong who has played music for several years joined Guai Li. Then, the lineup of the Guai Li was completed.

Every member in band has his own preference in music. Each one brings different elements to the songs. Wen Jun likes all the noisy and weird music. Liu Yue likes new indie rock. Xu Sheng likes traditional rock and pop music. He Yifan influenced by post punk deeply. While Shi Xudong prefer original punk music and hardcore. The band aren’t confused for the different likes between the music but try to blend everyone’s idea and feature in the music. Sometimes, the motive is from someone’s experience in daily life. In arranging part, others will try to break the original feeling of the motive, to create a new impression and add everyone’s thinking in. Sometimes, five persons play impromptu together and come cross a new song.

As their name, Guai Li people love all the mysterious and inexpressible things, like the ghost, witchcraft, universe, white noise and a little addiction. Guai Li’s music and playing style are just like their name, weird but full of inexpressible charm.

Guai Li and famous producer Fang Wuxing cooperated in the band’s debut album Flight of Delusion. The album has released in September, 2010. At the same time, the band toured in China for debut album release.

East Brunswick All Girls Choir - Dead Air [2009]

So I saw these guys play last friday. Reminded me of something from the 90s....slowcore/sadcore guitar music. I loved these guys and hopefully you will too.

Here's a short description from their website:

"We’re just four people from four different places. None of us live in East Brunswick nor have we ever lived there. However I did eat a curry there once.

Some were almost forced to join a voluntary choir in primary school but much preferred pretending to be Mark Waugh far too much to be able to spend summery days in a multi purpose room singing “..and he will raise you up on Jesus’ wings”. Fours had to be hit. The cricket dream was eventually given up though. It all got a bit too real.

It was time to make a real team of real talent and origin.

East Brunswick All Girls Choir is made up of a mini golf course curator from Lockwood South, a Pool Shark Ninja who relocated from Yokahama, a gaming pizza cooking nerd from Golden Square and one failed cricketer who once walked the hallowed turf of Maiden Gully."
